With busy routines, online communication has become one of the primary ways people send messages to each other. Many prefer it this way, whether it’s ordering out for dinner or doing self-check-out at the grocery store.

Juggling meals, transportation, work, and extracurriculars can leave parents with very little free time for mundane tasks like absence requests and lunch payments.

Instead of using precious free time making calls and sending emails, Skyward's Family Access portal allows busy parents to quickly access and update student information right from their personal device.

The Family Access Toolkit

Family Access has the potential to change your entire school-to-home communication culture, but lack of awareness can pose a significant barrier to both buy-in and comfort level. This toolkit can help. Here are some of the highlights:

Administrators

Easy URL: https://www.skyward.com/support/parents-and-students/family-access-toolkit/administrators

In terms of “things you can tangibly use,” this will be the most relevant page for PR pros. A downloadable poster and handout-sized promotional materials to help push more parents toward the portal while driving home the value of increased parent engagement.

With Family Access, admins can manage:
  • District News Posting
  • Free and Reduced Lunch
  • Gradebook Tracker
  • Message Center Usage Report
  • Mobile Payment Configuration

Teachers

You know better than most that communication fails when it doesn’t go both ways. Use these resources to instill confidence in your teachers and drive a culture of collaboration with parents:
  • Conference Availability
  • Message Center
  • Post Updates to Family Access

Parents

Easy URL: https://www.skyward.com/support/parents-and-students/family-access-toolkit/parents

As you might imagine, this section is the heart and soul of the Toolkit. With 11 videos(!) at last count, and it’s also the largest. Do your parents know what information they can access?

This list will help parents learn about:
  • Online Registration
  • Absence Requests
  • Calendar
  • Career Plans
  • Food Service
  • Grades
  • Messaging
  • Mobile Food Service Payments
  • New Student Online Enrollment
  • Parent-Teacher Conference Scheduler
  • Push Notifications

With these resources, you should have no problem addressing many of your parents’ needs in advance. We encourage you to take these and embed them (they’re all hosted in YouTube) directly on to your website, preferably on a parent landing spot between your homepage and your Skyward login. More knowledge leads to a more effective partnership between schools and communities.

Students

Easy URL: https://www.skyward.com/support/parents-and-students/family-access-toolkit/students

Students are typically the most well-versed group of Skyward users without any additional prompting. Even so, we’ve created tutorial videos for the most important tasks they’ll be completing in Family Access. Make sure to check out the hype video — it’s a favorite!

Look at:
  • Career Plans
  • Check Your Calendar
  • Email Alerts
  • Grades
  • Push Notifications

Communication and task management are made easy with Skyward’s Family Access portal. Whether you’re an admin, teacher, parent, or student, these resources can help you ensure your messages go both ways.
