Online enrollment saves families time and effort. Instead of attending specific enrollment events held in-person, families use Skyward to enroll their children, completing online forms and adding documents—accessible even from a mobile device.

New student enrollment (NSE) enhancements now support credential creation without requiring an email address. Here's how it works.

By popular demand

This enhancement was important to customers: 14 different districts added 50 votes in the Product Ideas Portal in favor of giving families the option of enrolling with or without an email address.

How does it work?

Administrators can change their settings using this path within Admin Access:

Family > System Configuration > uncheck the box “Require Guardian’s Email

The system will prompt administrators to add a username tiebreaker function to their security settings within user creation if not already active. Duplication in username is avoided.

When an adult navigates to the New Guardian Request screen, the first step to enrolling children in school, they will be able to select an option that reads “I don’t have an email address.” This setting will remove the email field and open the rest of the form to the parent or guardian enrolling the child(ren).

Then, once the form is submitted using “Create Login,” a username will be generated and displayed, prompting the guardian to create a password, then log in using their new credentials.

Important password reset note

Because the parent does not have an email address on file, password reset requests need to go directly to the district office. Administrators will need to reset the password for the users without email addresses.

It’s likely families will not realize this is the case and may require additional communication to share the process, which phone number to call or location to contact, and how to get in touch with the school district to start a password reset process without an email address.

This feature doesn’t require any changes to security settings. If an administrator changes the setting from requiring an email address, users will be able to enroll their children with or without an email address.

This functionality was widely requested because families are diverse and have access to different resources in districts nationwide. Now guardians can create Skyward login credentials without requiring an email address.
